George and Pamela Johnson started a business in the 1990’s with the noble goal of helping folks on welfare get training and work. This is a noble goal, and they had received several awards for their work.
Their business, The Diversified Educational Training and Manufacturing Co (is that a mouthful or what?) received taxpayer funds for student tuition, books and the like. During a 2003 audit, the city of Wichita, KS (where the company was based) found numerous discrepancies. They found the city was billed tuition for students that didn’t attend the school, and for books which students never received.
But of course, when the city cut off funding, it wasn’t because the Johnsons were doing anything wrong… it was because of racism (natch!).
