Lost of talk and chatter going around regarding mascots of professional, college and high school teams. There are tons of them, everywhere. From Redskins, to Braves, to Warriors, to Seminoles, to Chippewas and on and on…
I did find this site that has a fairly balanced discussion of the issue Native American Mascots: Racial Slur or Cherished Tradition?
My particular favorite is the quote by Susan Shown Harjo of the Morning Star Institute (sorry, I can’t find a website for this group). At any rate, she is quoted in the March 2002 Sports Illustrated as saying:
“Native Americans’ self-esteem has fallen so low that they don’t even know when they’re being insulted.”
Now, it seems to me, that telling someone they are so stupid they don’t know when they should be offended is pretty demeaning, and insulting. I could be wrong…(but I’m not).
Stumble it!
